I had to check in again after a year off. Martin still can't get away from nonsense. The model wheel was hard to take apart at 1/10 scale. Imagine 3 gruff, tough men disassembling this regularly. Mayhem ensues.

Rubber marbles will introduce all sorts of friction issues when you start trying to get the to move through tight spaces or stack them together

I may have missed it previously (watching since MMX days), but I like the appearance of "critical Hannes" to offer a dissenting opinion! In the past, he's been more of a "keep it up, you're doing great!" but now it's nice to see more Person A / Person B dialog (instead of just Person A responding to viewer's dissent) Presenting the ideas through persuasive conversations is a great way to fully show two sides of the argument.

I'm on Martin on this, I believe the sound is absurdly better with the drum stick in this very case. Also, I wouldn't say reducing parts would be always simpler. Here it seems to be more repeatable and easier to catch marbles bouncing on a plate on top of a drum stick, that always stops at the same position rather than on a cymbal that pivots from one free pivot point which would be necessary, again, for the sound of it.

May 2024? I was addicted to drugs when i found this dude. 10 years later, im at work and a co-worker showed me a video on how marbles are made and then i showed him this!

how about wooden balls?

Use the drum stick with just one set up for sound per stick and you could then continue with just one type of marble. Maybe for different sounds have two sticks on each cymbal set up differently, each with its own channel. But remember KISS or it will never reach a satisfactory workable state…

Try sticking different materials to the cymbal as landing pads for the marbles. I think you did that with the vibraphone a while back.

If you have different marble types, you then need to sort the marbles when they have been dropped to be able to recycle them correctly, which is adding unnecessary complexity. This also starts to look like feature creep.

just a thought what if you used wood marbles with with some of lead inside

Two days before this video came out, I saw several mechanical machines at the museum for musical instruments in Phoenix, Arizona. The museum provides headsets that allow you to hear how the instruments sound as you approach them within the displays, although they provided a live demonstration of one of the devices (I can't recall the name of it, but it fills a section of the room). He's absolutely right... none of those devices seem to capture the sound quite correctly. They aren't necessarily terrible to hear, but if one may hear the instrument perform in a better manner, perhaps you'll have something just a little more special than what we currently have out there.

Martin: "I want to use marbles to make the sound of wood hitting a cymbal." Me: "Oh, so you're gonna use wooden marbles for that?" Martin: "So I'm going to have the marbles hit a wooden stick that then hits the cymbal." Edit: I am aware that wooden marbes is probably not a good idea, it's just the first idea I had.

Hi Martin! You've got so many comments, so maybe someone had already suggested hardwood marbles for Cymbals? If not, I would suggest to try out some different hardwood ones?! Maybe it will sound good?

So why not try to put a rubber patch at where the marble hits the cymbal, like you did with the vibrophone?

I agree that it's more magical seeing marbles hit instruments directly. But I also agree that sound is more important. Perhaps the cymbal can be A BIT hidden behind all the drums and such? Maybe arrange those set of instruments in a way that the drum stick isn't visible.

A couple years of this and maybe you’ll have something that makes ahh sub 3ms tight music that absolutely nobody will notice one way or the other because their ears cannot even pick up.

This is undoubtedly one of your best videos in ages. Way more practical, honest and open. Keep them like this Also, your mum was absolutely right, hearing you improvise every so often makes this videos so much better. And wow! Hannes looks so good, props to him :)

If you are looking for rubber-coated steel balls, try computer mouse balls!

I personally say keep the drum stick. It sounds much better and the marbles are still activating the stick to play the cymbal. The marbles hitting the hi-hat directly sounds good but not on the crash.

Now might be a good time to re-examine if steel marbles are really the best fit. For example, you could use glow-in-the dark rubber, or something that reacts to blacklight so they really show up during the concerts.

Put some rubber or felt on the cymbal. It's not that hard, you did it before.

I didn't read all the replies, but how about gluing wood, rubber, and different materials to the surface of the cymbol. This way the marble can hit directly on the cymbol, but you still can control the sound that it makes when it hits.

What about a wooden marble, but weighted with a metal core. The wooden marble on its own sounded weak, cause it was much lighter.
